Culture is a broad concept that includes many different forms of expression, including sport. Sport has had a profound impact on culture globally and in Australia and continues to be a vibrant form of cultural expression.
Australian sports stars like Nicky Winmar and Cathy Freeman created history when their athletic performances reached beyond the sporting field to influence the culture of the times.
For this research project, you will create one blog post for each of these 3 tasks:
- A great moment in Australian sporting history that influenced popular culture (300 words)
- Biography of an inspirational sportsperson or sports team presented as a timeline (at least 7 separate entries)
- Presentation about the importance of sport in culture with recorded voiceover (5 minutes)

For this task, you will focus on a great moment in Australian sporting history that influenced popular culture. You have been given a list to choose from and there is a sample blog post called ‘Nicky Winmar’s famous gesture’. There is a worksheet for researching and also a Word template on Compass for writing.

Biography of an inspirational sportsperson or team
For this task, you will create a biographical timeline for an inspirational sportsperson or sports team of your choice. There is a sample blog post called ‘Australia’s first cricket team was all Indigenous’. You will be given a PowerPoint template for a similar timeline, however you are free to design your own timeline.
Presentation about the importance of sport in culture
For this final task, you will create a presentation about the importance of sport in culture using PowerPoint or Prezi. You will record a voiceover for your presentation and embed it into your post (PowerPoint) or add a link to it (Prezi).You will be given plenty of time to prepare your presentation and write your script, rehearse your voiceover and record it.
